Epilepsy is a neurological disorder marked by sudden recurrent episodes of sensory disturbance, loss of consciousness, or convulsions, associated with abnormal electrical activity in the brain.
Recently, cannabidiol has been suggested as a potential alternative therapy for refractory epilepsy, which affects 30% of epilepsy, both adults and children, who do not respond to current medications. There is a large unmet medical need for new anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) that would not interfere with normal function in patients with refractory epilepsy and conditions associated with refractory seizures. Cannabidiol (CBD) is the major non-psychoactive component of marijuana.
IMPORTANT: Before starting treatment with CBD for epilepsy, we strongly recommend discussing this option with your (or your child’s) doctor. While CBD has shown benefit in patients with epilepsy, you should continue to take your current medications as prescribed. In epileptic patients, CBD should only be started under the supervision of a licensed healthcare provider.
Ask your doctor today if CBD is right for you or your loved one with epilepsy. We look forward to helping you live healthier through hemp!
